Chocolate custard, who didn't grow up with it. But this one is also completely vegan and easy and quick to prepare.

Chocolate custard (Vegan)

In the Netherlands we were used to regularly eating vanilla custard or chocolate custard for dessert. We have not been able to find them in Spain yet. And we are also increasingly eating vegan. So it's high time we started making vegan variations. The first is the chocolate custard. We really liked it and it was ready in 15 minutes.

  • 150 gr sugar
  • 30 gr cocoa powder
  • 550 ml soy milk or other vegetable milk
  • 1,5 tbsp agar agar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable butter
  • 1 tsp vanille extract
  • 1 tbsp chopped mixed nuts or cookie crumbs


  • Sift a mixture of sugar, cocoa powder, cornflour and salt and mix together in a saucepan.
  • Add the soy milk and agar agar and stir to combine.
  • Heat the mixture over medium heat until it boils. Cook for another minute until it thickens slightly.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
  • Fill glasses, bowls or nice jars with the chocolate custard and let it set in the fridge.
  • Before serving, you can decorate it to taste with some chopped nuts or biscuit crumbs.
