Gingerbread spices

In Sinterklaas time we feast on speculaas. However, the herbs are not always available abroad. That is why we like to give the recipe for gingerbread spices separately. Just a mixture of herbs that you can get in any supermarket.

If you can't get gingerbread spices in the store (for example because you don't live in the Netherlands?), you can easily mix them yourself with spices that are all available in every supermarket.

  • 5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom (seeds or powder, not whole pods)
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon anis seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder


  • Mix all spices. If they are not all ground already, you can grind them or grind them to a powder.
  • Store in a sealed jar, keeps for months.
